Surely the busiest month in the calendar for golfers! I do remember when August was considered a holiday month!
On 3 August came the much awaited, quite incredible Captains' Charity Day! The culmination of considerable efforts from so many resulted in a fantastic day and evening enjoyed by about 100 members, family and friends and corporate guests with a staggering amount of money raised for the Captains' Charity, MedEquip4kids. A separate article has been posted on the website (members section password wa160wa General News). Thank you all very much indeed!
On Tuesday, 8 August the Ladies hosted their annual Invitation Day. A terrific day when ladies invited friends to play our stunning course and enjoy lunch in the beautiful bar and dining room with splendid floral arrangements from Judy Sage and a very impressive raffle table with prizes kindly donated by our ladies and wrapped and ribboned by our ladies under Bella's supervision. Huge thanks!
Rachel Milne's team came in with a tremendous result to win the competition, with Lesley McCluskey's team coming 2nd and Lesley Hewison and Robyn's team 3rd. Congratulations to all!
Particular thanks to Kath Davies, Lady Vice Captain, Marianne, Lynn Allatt and Liz Smith for helping with the arrangements. Also thanks to Tricia Hodkinson with whose help a huge amount was added to the Captains' Charity fund through the sale of raffle tickets. Thanks to all for supporting.
On Tuesday 22 August the High Legh ladies took on the challenge of the prestigious Manchester Golf Club course. We were all announced by microphone on the first tee by the Lady Captain, Mary Hough's husband, Keith - no pressure! Certainly when we returned to the clubhouse over 4 hours later we felt that we had taken considerable exercise, possibly in several counties and faced challenges that would stretch our game and imagination! A fun and testing quiz drawn up by the very talented Jane Walden made the pre-dinner interlude pass quickly and fairly frivolously. Thank you Jane!
In the meantime the ladies from Manchester Golf Club thoroughly enjoyed their day at High Legh Park and were all just about seated on their deluxe coach ready for their return trip in tremendously high spirits when some of us returned to the club! So a good day was had by all! Many thanks to Dawn and Beverley for meeting and greeting, to Sue Tagg and the team for looking after the Manchester ladies so well and Christine Murphy for the very pretty floral decorations.
On Saturday 26 August the weather was extremely kind for the Greenkeepers' Benefit Competition in which a full field of members enjoyed the fun and very unusual challenges set for them by the Greenkeepers! The evening was enjoyed by many members and friends dancing to live soul music and being entertained by a stand up comedy act. A great event well organised by Nigel Curran.
On Tuesday 22 August the annual Ladies v Seniors match took place. This is a popular event and went well in much part thanks to Marianne McKenzie, Lynn Allatt and Gill Lewis, plus decent weather! The shotgun start meant we could all enjoy a good hearty lunch together before the serious business of the prize presentation. The Silver Salver was presented to the "Seniors" the 2017 winners! Next year ladies!
The A team lost away at Stockport.
The Friendly Team had a draw away at Bramall Park and a draw at home to Withington.
The Ladies Business Team did incredibly well to get to the quarter finals and then were defeated by Prestbury.
A good opportunity to thank our Team organisers who do a fantastic job in setting up all the matches and keeping all the players on track with dates and venues. Our appreciation goes to Mary Gomme who organised the A, B and Plate teams, Kath Davies, the Friendly Teams and Sarah Hossack, the Business Ladies.
For September, on Friday 8th unbelievably it will be the last Supper Golf. This fun event is run by Lesley Hewison between April and September and it really is enjoyed by so many. Lesley comes up with all kinds of competitions, some which involve props such as lengths of string and some which involve shots of damson gin or is it sloe gin?! So a huge thanks to Lesley for all her hard work and amazing sense of fun!
10/11 September is the ladies away trip to Carden Park which will involve 32 ladies playing 2 X 18 hole rounds of golf and a enjoying a dinner and overnight, hopefully with a certain amount of luxury! We shall keep you posted, maybe!
The schedule for Tuesdays in September show the Daily Mail Foursomes on 12th.
There is a Stableford qualifier on 19th and the last Major of the season is the Linda Pope on the 26th also a Stableford.
A Captains' Mixed Away Day is planned for Thursday 5 October, details of which will be announced in an email from the Captains and sign up will be on BRS in due course.
Friday Roll Ups are on schedule each week from 10.36-11.12, everyone is welcome.
Gill Lewis's yoga class is back on the schedule on Wednesday evenings at 6.00pm after a summer break and comes highly recommended.
It would be lovely to think we could yet have some glorious weather along with the beautiful spectacle that is soon to be Autumn! Let's hope so!
In the meantime, sending
Best wishes and kind regards
